Doual'art, a contemporary art center based in Douala, Cameroon since 1991, invites creative individuals (visual artists, architects, designers) to reflect upon the city and propose artistic actions. Its artistic policy is orientated toward the accompaniment and support of artists interested in urban issues through their researches and their practices. Doual'art's mission is to function as a laboratory for research concerning art and urbanism in concert with the city's mutations. The "think tank" Ars & Urbis organizes periodical meetings between curators, researchers, urbanists, architects, sociologists, and brought together with the University of Douala and the Douala Urban Council, to create information that documents and enriches the creative process. Doual'art's triennial program schedule (exhibitions, artist residencies) is wrapped up at the end of each period by the festival SUD (Salon Urbain de Douala), when public art projects offered to the city during this three year interval are inaugurated. Meetings and events such as performances, openings, and interventions in urban spaces give a singular week-long vibrancy to the city. SUD2007 dealt with urban themes chosen by the artists themselves, such as mobility, sonic space, "rurbanity" (rural urbanity) of African cities, the jobs of the second-tier economy, and the sorrows of history. SUD2010 explored the theme of "water and the city". SUD2013 will explore the theme of "ARTchitectUrbanism". To this day, doual'art has offered the city twenty-one pieces of public art, as well as eighteen of the thirty "Arcs of Memory" that inform people on the history of Douala. Doual'art's exhibition space offers a program of Cameroonian and foreign artists, both emerging and established, with approximately eight exhibitions a year.
