Age 15, Atim goes off to find the man who killed his father. A long time ago, two months before he was born… He arrives in N'djamena, the captial of Chad, and starts his search for Abdallah Nassara, the assassin…

Nassara, former war criminal, has long since laid down his weapons: he is in his sixties, and is both respected and respectable. He is the owner of a small bakery…

Atim finds Nassara. He even manages to be hired as an apprentice at the bakery… Nassara, who does not know anything about Atim, takes him under hi swing and teaches him the art of how to make bread… An initiation.

A strange relationship develops between the two men, each attracted to the other: Atim finds in this man the paternal figure he has always lacked; and Nassara discovers a potential son in the adoles-cent. He even offers to adopt him… But can one escape one's destiny?

DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT

In my previous film, Abouna, I already explored the absence of a father, who left leaving no trace… This is once again the story of a father, who is also absent, but this time because he was killed by a man; and his son is obliged to repair the damage made to the family.

Thus, it is a tale of revenge. In this film, I would like to explore the most savage, primitive and telluric forces to be found in Mankind. Those dark forces that nestle in the depths of Man, and which power the machines of horror. Here and elsewhere.

How can cohabitation be possible after so much hate and violence? Is there still room for forgiveness? What is the right reaction to impunity? Resignation or taking justice into one's own hands?

Ciad, 2006. Il governo ha amnistiato i criminali di guerra. Atim, un ragazzo di sedici anni, riceve dalla mani del nonno una pistola, per andare ad uccidere l'uomo che ha ucciso suo padre…

Atim lascia il villaggio in cui vive per recarsi a N'djamena, alla ricerca di un uomo che non conosce. Lo trova subito: ex-criminale di guerra, Nassara è oggi un uomo per bene, sposato, e proprietario di un panificio…

Atim accosta Nassara, gli fa credere di cercare lavoro e si fa assumere da lui come apprendista, con la ferma intenzione di ucciderlo… Incuriosito dall'atteggiamento di Atim nei suoi confronti, Nassara lo prende sotto la sua protezione, e gli insegna l'arte e il modo di fare il pane…

Con il trascorrere del tempo, tra i due si intreccia uno strano rapporto. Nonostante la ripugnanza che prova, Atim sembra trovare in Nassara la figura paterna che gli è sempre mancata; dal canto suo, Nassara intravede nell'adoloscente un possibile figlio.
Un giorno, gli propone di adottarlo…

O filme recebeu o prêmio especial do júri no festival de Veneza 2006, o de diretor no festival de Gijón 2006 (Espanha) e o da imprensa estrangeira no festival de Adelaide 2007 (Austrália).
