Black Africa flows in the veins of Morocco. Originally slaves who started to arrive in the 15th century with the gold of Western Sudan, the Gnaouas gathered into brotherhoods which continue to practice rituals of possession and exorcism, borrowing as much from pre-Islamic culture as from the rituals of African divinities. These religious and therapeutic ceremonies, accompanied by the bass of the great hajhouj lute, the crackling of the metal castanets and the heavy beat of the drums, call for the mlouk, the beneficial genie who will come down upon the dancer at the acme of his trance.

Die Gnawas von Marrakesch und Tassila sind hier die Hauptpersonen - mit ihren Zeremonien von Trance und Exorzismus, die noch aus vorislamischer Kultur stammen, aus afrikanischen Götterwelten südlich der Sahara. Sie sind im 15. Jahrhundert mit dem westsudanesischen Gold nach Marokko gekommen so wie die großen Trommeln, die die Hajhouj-Laute und die metallene Perkussion rhythmisieren.
