December 24, 2001. Fleeing American bombings at Tora Bora, a young Frenchman, Hervé Djamel Loiseau, was found dead of starvation and thirst in the freezing Afghan mountains. Villagers found on him his return air ticket for France, his passport, an I.D. card, a pocket Koran, 30 rupees and two aspirins.
According to French intelligence, Loiseau was one of the 300 soldiers of Allah who left France for Ben Laden's training camps. What drove this 28-year-old Frenchman to join the ranks of Al Qaeda and the holy war?
Brahim Yadel left France with Djamel. Yadel was wounded in the leg at Tora Bora and capture by the Afghans. He spent almost three years at Guantanamo. Through Brahim, we retrace the channels that brought these young soldiers of Allah to join the Jihad and led Djamel to a martyr's death.
